Two Republican legislators who chair the higher education committees received top honors Thursday from the Minnesota State College Student Association.
State Sen. Michelle Fischbach and state Rep. Bud Nornes were named legislators of the year by the student group.
“As chairs of the higher education committees, Representative Bud Nornes and Senator Michelle Fischbach took lead roles in protecting Minnesota’s two-year college students from another biennium of skyrocketing tuition costs, while mitigating cuts in funding to the MnSCU system,” said MSCSA Vice President Darleen Tareeq.
The group said the two legislators fought to include a tuition cap during the state budget battle and maintained a 4 percent cap on tuition for 100,000 two-year public college students in the state.
