Govs. Dayton and Walker to discuss new St. Croix bridge

This afternoon, Gov. Mark Dayton and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker will meet in Stillwater to discuss the new bridge over the St. Croix River.

It will replace the aging Lift Bridge in downtown Stillwater, and connect western Wisconsin and the Twin Cities metro area, hooking into Hwy. 36 in Oak Park Heights.

The governors will have a 3:30 p.m. press conference in Stillwater's Lowell Park.

The controversial bridge project was stopped once by environmentalists who said the design violated the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. But it was revived through efforts by Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Dayton.

Construction is expected to start in 2014 with completion three years later. Soil testing will start this summer.

Still unresolved is how Oak Park Heights will pay $5 million to $20 million for relocation of utilities.

Oak Park Heights can still

stop the Boondoggle Bridge by refusing to authorize it.

I find it interesting that Governor Walker thinks this bridge is okay but turned down federal dollars (and many jobs) to complete high-speed rail through his state.

What Oak Park Heights can do

is hold up improvements to Hwy 36. That won't stop the new bridge from being built, however.
