St. Croix bridge construction to start in 2014
President Obama hasn't yet signed the bill authorizing construction of a new bridge over the St. Croix River, but Minnesota Department of Transportation officials have announced that construction will start in 2014.
It would be finished three years later, according to the plan, and John Chiglo, the engineer who led the Interstate 35W bridge rebuilding project, will manage the effort.
The House passed the legislation March 1, and MnDOT officials expect the president to sign the legislation soon.
The four-lane bridge will cross the river south of Stillwater and replace the aging Stillwater lift bridge.
Soil testing will start this summer.
There's still a question of how the city of Oak Park Heights will pay utility relocation costs, when the new roadway comes through.

What might happen if
the organization that opposes the Big Boondoggle Bridge were to sue in federal court on the basis that it is fiscally irresponsible to spend this much taxpayer money on one bridge while a smaller design would save several million dollars that are desperately needed to repair or replace bridges and roads in bad shape all around the state?
Exactly right
Disgraceful especially since Minnesota pays more than Wisconsin. Idiotic
Minnesota pays more
because of work along Highway 36, some of which would have to be done even if no bridge was built. The actual bridge cost is split 50/50 between Wisconsin and Minnesota.
