An item today in Politico says Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak has to be considered a possible successor to Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, should she decide to step down in January.

Rybak, who will decide soon whether to run for a fourth term as Minneapolis mayor, was an early supporter of President Obama early in his first campaign.

Rybak is now DNC vice chair.

The Politico story, by Alexander Burns says: “Rybak won plaudits in Washington and Chicago over the past year as an energetic surrogate for the president, particularly in the Midwest.”

The story says another mayor may be on the list, too: “Los Angeles’s Antonio Villaraigosa, who chaired the 2012 Democratic National Convention, toured swing states for Obama and appeared frequently on both English- and Spanish-language national television.”

Two governors are also mentioned: Ohio’s Ted Strickland and Michigan’s Jennifer Granholm.
