Several Minnesota members of Congress took to the House floor Thursday, amidst the shutdown crisis, to speak fondly of former U.S. Sen. Rod Grams.

Grams died Tuesday of cancer at age 65. He served one term in the House of Representatives, too, before being elected to the Senate in 1994.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who represents Minnesota’s 6th District — which Grams also represented in the House — led the Minnesota tribute.

She called Grams “a very humble man and a man who hung onto principle.”

Also taking part were Congressmen Rick Nolan, Erik Paulsen and Keith Ellison.
