As expected, the University of California system named Mark Yudof president Thursday. Yudof is former president of the University of Minnesota. Yudof will get a total compensation package of $828,000, just about double that of the president he will succeed at UC. That's almost a $40,000 raise from the $790,000 he was paid at the University of Texas system, which he will continue to head until summer.
 
He will also get an almost $9,000 annual car allowance, university-owned housing and moving expenses. If he takes a faculty position after he finishes as president, the university will move him and his wife, Judy, and help them buy a house.
 
This may be Yudof's last big job. He's 63 and has stayed in each of his last two presidencies about five years. If that pattern holds, he'll be looking at 70 years old when it's next time for a change.
