Minneapolis' Hyatt Regency to be GOP committee HQ; McCain likely gets St. Paul Hotel?

By Joe Kimball | Published Mon, Apr 7 2008 11:36 am

The Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Minneapolis will be the headquarters for the Republican National Committee, but the official convention business will be conducted 10 miles away at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul.

Maria Cino, convention CEO, announced the headquarters this morning at a St. Paul news conference. She said the hotel's size, space and meeting rooms were all factors in selecting the headquarters, as well as assigning state delegations to 35 area hotels.

Those hotels — most of them in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Bloomington — will house the delegations from the 50 states and six U.S. territories. The Courtyard Minneapolis in Shoreview, Maple Grove and Brooklyn Park seem to be the furthest from the action in St. Paul. Cino said delegates will be housed no further than 35 to 40 minutes away.

Sixty-six other hotels will house the media and other visitors. All those hotels, too, Cino said, are within the 35- to 40-minute range from Xcel.

The Minnesota delegation gets to stay in downtown St. Paul, at the Hilton Garden Inn. South Dakota gets Maple Grove. And Arizona gets the St. Paul Hotel, where, presumably, John McCain would stay.

In all, organizers have reserved 16,000 rooms in 101 area hotels; GOP officials expect 45,000 delegates, media and other visitors.
