GOP convention post still vacant, but (fashion) show must go on

By Joe Kimball | Published Mon, May 12 2008 10:28 am

Republicans still haven't determined who will replace Doug Goodyear as manager of the Republican National Convention; he resigned abruptly Saturday less than five hours after Newsweek reported online that his lobbying firm had once represented the repressive Myanmar military junta.

Goodyear's appointment to be McCain's manager at the convention — the guy who'd be working closely with convention CEO Maria Cino — had been announced less than two weeks ago.

The Newsweek story also noted that Goodyear's consulting firm, DCI Group, also earned $3 million last year lobbying for ExxonMobil, General Motors and other clients.

This morning the RNC folks report that a replacement is still to be determined.

But... the show must go on, and the local convention host committee has news of its own this morning: The official apparel for the 2008 RNC will be unveiled Tuesday at a Mall of America fashion show.

According to the announcement: "The apparel, which includes nonpartisan, bipartisan and official Convention logo merchandise, will be modeled by local dignitaries including Bloomington Mayor Gene Winstead and also FM107's "Polichicks" Cathie Hartnett and Annette Meeks. Maria Cino, President and Chief Executive Officer of the 2008 Republican National Convention; and Cyndi Lesher, President of the Minneapolis Saint Paul 2008 Host Committee, will emcee the event."

It will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Mall rotunda, which is becoming a political hot spot of sorts. It's the same place Jesse Ventura will be signing his new book at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
