    Franken gears up with hiring of campaign manager

    The Franken for Senate campaign became a little more traditional today with the announcement that Stephanie Schriock will become campaign manager in early June. To date, Franken's campaign has not had a single person with the title of campaign manager.

    Schriock, who was campaign manager for Montana's Jon Tester in his U.S. Senate race triumph over three-term incumbent Conrad Burns in 2006, does have Minnesota roots. She was born in Minnesota, attended Mankato State University and was involved in two high-profile Minnesota congressional races.

    In 1996, she was finance director for Mary Rieder in her close-but-no-cigar race against heavily favored Gil Gutknecht in the 1st District.  In 1998, she was campaign manager for Bill Luther when he defeated John Kline in what was then the 6th District. Luther lost to Kline four years later, when district lines were redrawn and the 6th District became the 2nd.

    Franken campaign officials say the hiring of Schriock doesn't signal any major changes in the organization but is a traditional step in  preparing for the race against incumbent Norm Coleman. The hiring apparently assumes that Franken will win endorsement at the DFL convention, which is to be held June 6-8.
