A bridge named for Martin Olav Sabo

The Midtown Greenway bridge over Hiawatha Avenue is to be named after former U.S. Rep. Martin Olav Sabo at a ceremony from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Sunday at the west end of the bridge at 28th Street in south Minneapolis. The $5.1 million cable-stayed bridge joins two ends of the Midtown Greenway, which connects the Chain of Lakes to the Mississippi River pedestrian and bike pathways.

In his 28 years in the Congress, the Democrat from Minneapolis funneled millions of federal dollars to Minneapolis bike paths. Former Vice President Walter Mondale and Sabo's successor, Keith Ellison, will be among the speakers at the ceremony. There also will be a bike parade. — Doug Grow
