Obama invites 3 state superdelegates backing Clinton to tonight's rally

By Doug Grow | Published Tue, Jun 3 2008 12:08 pm

The three remaining Minnesota superdelegates who have stood steadfast with Hillary Clinton have been invited to Barack Obama's celebratory event tonight at the Xcel Center. The invitation to Walter Mondale, Rick Stafford and Jackie Stevenson came from the Obama campaign with no strings attached.

"We were told that there was no commitment involved in the invitation,'' said Rick Stafford, a member of the Democratic National Committee. "They said they were just reaching out. That was important.''

Neither Stevenson nor Mondale are expected at the event. Stevenson said she had a prior family commitment. Mondale was not available to comment. Stafford said he plans to attend.

Stafford also said that the three Clinton supporters had planned to meet sometime later this week to discuss their situation.

Stevenson, who has been an outspoken Clinton supporter, said she was pleased by the tone of the Obama invitation, and she also doesn't believe Clinton has a chance of winning the nomination.

"But it's not over until the lady in the pant suit says it's over,'' she said.
