    Local politicians will get vastly different treatment at the two conventions

    The Democrats announced today that Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter Jr. and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper will address the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver later this month.

    Mayor Hickenlooper will speak on the convention's opening night, Monday, Aug. 25, at the Pepsi Center.

    Ritter will speak Thursday on its closing night at INVESCO Field at Mile High. More than 75,000 people are expected there to see Sen. Barack Obama accept the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.

    The week after that, when the Republicans come to St. Paul, they won't be hearing either St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman or Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak speaking to delegates. Both of our mayors are Democrats.

    But you can bet our governor will be featured prominently during the convention. Will Tim Pawlenty be welcoming delegates? Or accepting the VP bid?
