A Washington Post-ABC national horserace poll out this morning has the presidential race Obama 52, McCain 43 with a margin of error of 3 percentage points, which makes it the first major poll in a long time that had either presidential candidate with a statistically significant lead.

The survey was taken Friday through via interviews with 780 likely voters. The Post write-up attributes Obama's recent surge to the electorate's recent focus on the financial crisis:

"More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic problems Americans now face. He also has a double-digit advantage on handling the current problems on Wall Street."

I'm not sure but I think 52 percent may be the high-water mark for Obama's national support as measured by any major poll, although he had been at 50 and 51 percent before McCain's big surge during and immediately after the Republican convention. The last time Post/ABC did this poll, Sept. 5-7, they found McCain 49, Obama 47.

Even as the Post poll was published, two other daily tracking polls found Obama with a smaller lead.
