Forum to look at job search for those with criminal records

By Joe Kimball | Published Fri, Sep 26 2008 1:57 pm

Helping those with criminal records find jobs — a difficult task even in a positive economic climate but even tougher these days — is the focus of a forum Monday, Oct. 6, at the Minnesota History Center.

Featured speaker is Rep. Keith Ellison, who'll talk about Federal Second Chance act, and preview other policy changes being considered in Washington.

The forum runs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with Ellison's keynote address at 10 a.m. At noon, Gary Johnson, Minnesota Department of Corrections, will talk about re-entry and employment here in Minnesota.

The goal is to formulate effective legislation to be considered by the 2009 Legislature.

    According to the announcement:

"The financial outlook for the state of Minnesota is bleak. This is just one reason it is critical to assist individuals with criminal records in securing and maintaining employment so they become contributing members of our society. A tremendous bi-product of employment is that fewer individuals will recidivate, improving public safety while also reducing government costs. The impact on both rural and urban communities is increasing and therefore, we need to identify statewide solutions."
