    38 years after police officer's slaying, St. Paul dedicates Sackett Park sign

    A new sign was unveiled and dedicated Monday at the St. Paul park honoring slain police officer James Sackett Sr.

    The park, on the city's East Side, is adjacent to the St. Paul East Side Boys & Girls Club, on Ames Avenue.

    Sackett was assassinated in 1970 after being lured to a home by a false emergency call. The case languished for decades until 2006, when two men were convicted of the murder. One, though, recently was granted a new trial by the state Supreme Court.

    Sackett was 27 at the time of his death; he'd been on the police force for 18 months. He would have turned 66 on Monday.

    The Sackett Park is just south of the Roosevelt Homes housing project and includes grassy areas and a ball field.
