    State disability council to honor two legislators today

    Andrew J. Imparato, president of the American Association of People with Disabilities in Washington, D.C., is in town today to speak at the 35th anniversary luncheon of the Minnesota State Council on Disability.

    Imparato, who has personal experience with bipolar disorder, frequently writes, speaks and provides testimony about disability issues. 

    I wrote about the council's history Wednesday but didn't mention today's lunch and Imparato's speech. The council will also bestow awards on 18 Minnesotans who have contributed to the disability community.

    Receiving the council's legislative award will be state Sen. Mary Olson of Bemidji, who helped procure funding for a dental clinic in Bemidji that provides services to people with disabilities who are on Medical Assistance.

    Also honored will be state Rep. Shelley Madore of Apple Valley, who's been a strong legislative advocate for people with disabilities. She lost in Tuesday's election.
     
    Tom Hauser, political reporter at KSTP-TV, is emcee of the luncheon at RiverCentre in St. Paul.
