    Coleman pulls out of bid to become NRSC chairman

    WASHINGTON, D.C.--Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., has decided to pull out of his bid to become chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), the top Senate fundraising position.

    Spokesman LeRoy Coleman said the senator has decided to withdraw "in order to give his undivided attention to the recount efforts."

    Coleman is embroiled in a recount with Democrat Al Franken that may not be settled until December. Coleman leads Franken by only 206 votes.

    Coleman, who narrowly lost the NRSC position to Elizabeth Dole in 2004, faced John Cornyn from Texas as his only opponent for chairmanship this year.

    In an interview, LeRoy Coleman said Sen. Coleman “is going to put his full support behind Senator Cornyn for NRSC chairman."
