Peavey Plaza in downtown Minneapolis is getting some recognition this year, as some preservation groups apparently worry that it might fall victim to development.
The sunken-plaza park, on the Nicollet Mall between 11th and 12th streets, was named one of the "Ten Most Endangered Historic Places" by the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota earlier this year.
Now, it's been included on the list of 12 modern landscapes -- "Marvels of Modernism" -- that are in danger of being lost, as selected by the Cultural Landscape Foundation.
An exhibit of those marvels, including Peavey Plaza, will be unveiled on Dec. 4, from 6 to8 p.m. at the Design Within Reach Store, 2939 Hennepin Ave. S., Minneapolis. The Peavey Plaza images, which were commissioned by the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, were taken by noted local photographer Keri Pickett.
The other 11 Marvels of Modernism are:
• Boston City Hall Plaza, Boston
• Estates Drive Reservoir, Oakland, Calif.
• Heritage Plaza, Heritage Park, Fort Worth, Texas
• Kaiser Roof Garden, Kaiser Center, Oakland, Calif.
• Lake Elizabeth, Allegheny Commons, Pittsburgh
• Manhattan Square Park, Rochester, N.Y.
• Mill Creek Canyon Earthworks, Kent, Wash.
• Miller Garden, Columbus, Ind.
• El Monte, Hato Rey, Puerto Rico
• Pacific Science Center Courtyard, Seattle, Wash.
• Parkmerced, San Francisco
The New York Times ran a piece Sunday on the exhibit.
