    Koochiching doesn't like proposed wetlands law change

    Koochiching County, which includes International Falls at the top of the state, threatens a revolt in the wetlands arena if a state law is changed.

    The International Falls Daily Journal says county board members may declare Koochiching "wetland free" if the change goes through.

    They don't like the proposal that would require landowners to report any time they fill in a wetland. Currently, there's an exemption for filling a wetland that's up to 10,000 square feet, although they are encouraged to report all fill-ins.

    Commissioner Wade Pavleck said every time a “shovel hits the ground,” it would have to be reported in Koochiching County.

    Commissioner Chuck Lepper joked that the county is going to have to gate the highways and build guard towers to protect it from state bureaucrats.
