Your chance to speak up on Minneapolis budget cuts

By Joe Kimball | Published Fri, Jan 30 2009 9:20 am

Facing a $13 million cut in state aid, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak will hold two public meetings to hear from citizens about money-saving ideas.

    The meetings are:

    Feb. 9: 7 to 8:30 p.m, MLK Park Center, 4055 Nicollet Ave. S.

    Feb. 10: 7 to 8:30 p.m., Eastside Neighborhood Services, 1700 Second St. N.E.

In a message to residents, Rybak said the city is in a better position than in 2003, when the state had another giant deficit and cut funding to cities. He said the city has paid off debt, restructured city government finances and delivered city services more efficiently. But, he said, these latest cuts from the state are significant and will affect city services.

He did promise that the city will not -- in his words -- take a page from the state’s financial practices and make a short-term fix to address a long-term structural problem.

Instead, Minneapolis will have a long-term vision, with a focus on results and with tough fiscal discipline, he said.
