    Innovative bike programs to be announced this morning

    A bike center at the University of Minnesota and a bike-sharing program in Minneapolis will be highlights of an announcment this morning about biking and walking improvements.

    University President Robert Bruininks and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak will speak at the presentation by Bike Walk Twin Cities, a federally funded plan to increase biking and walking -- and decrease driving -- in Minneapolis and neighboring communities.

    They'll speak at 11:30 a.m. at the site of the proposed U of M Bike Center, in the Oak Street Parking Ramp, on campus at 401 Oak St. S.E.

    Also on hand will be representatives from the City of Minneapolis and Nice Ride Minnesota, the nonprofit organization that will administer the Bike Share program featuring 1,000 bikes at 75 kiosks across the city.

    A total of $4 million in biking and walking improvements will be discussed, including six Bike Walk Twin Cities projects.
