Ron Carey, who has been the feisty chairman of the state’s Republican Party since 2005, is stepping down at the conclusion of his term, which is set to expire at the end of June. The party will name a successor when the party’s central committee meets on June 13.
Carey, whose voice appealed to the most conservative members of the party, has been under some fire since the last election, when Republicans took a drubbing at the polls. But it’s not clear whether a more “moderate” voice is in a position to take over leadership of the part.
MinnPost’s Blois Olson offered a recent backgrounder on the party politics surrounding the position.
Prior to being elected the state chairman, Carey spent 14 years as a member of the party’s executive committee. He’s been a conservative activist since 1971.
