In preparation for Saturday's Fishing Opener, Gov. Tim Pawlenty and his peeps are getting the Cook's tour of White Bear Lake today. This is the first time the official Governor's Opener has been on a metro lake; it was originally designed to get publicity for lakes in Greater Minnesota.
After broadcasting his 9 a.m. radio show from the White Bear Boat Works on the west side of the lake, the governor will be part of a demonstration with DNR officials on how to avoid transferring invasive species into lakes.
10 a.m.: Lt. Gov. Carol Molnau speaks to students at the North Campus of the high school, and at 10:15 a.m. Mary Pawlenty goes to Willow Elementary.
10:30 a.m.: The governor and DNR Commissioner Mark Holsten will tag yearling muskellunge as part of a muskie stocking study. Students from Lakeaires Elementary School will be on hand.
1:15 p.m.: The governor dedicates the Historic Lake Avenue Trail. Meanwhile, Molnau goes next door to Mahtomedi, on the northeast side of the lake, tp stock a pond, with help from Mahtomedi Middle School sixth-graders; and Mary Pawlenty goes to Lincoln Elementary.
2:15 p.m. The governor is scheduled to visit Water Gremlin, which makes fishing lures and sinkers.
2:30 p.m. Molnau at Tamarack Nature Center.
3 p.m.: Gov. to Veeco Corp., which makes equipment used to manufacture products in the data storage, semiconductor, wireless, lighting and solar industries.
4 p.m.: The Pawlentys and Molnau attend Community Picnic in downtown White Bear.
5 p.m.: Mary Pawlenty and former Twin Jack Morris participate in a walleye filleting and cooking demonstration in downtown.
With all that commotion, the First Couple will likely be too tired for that other activity the governor joked about at last year's opened.
When it comes to actual fishing, the governor is rumored to be heading out at 3:30 a.m. Saturday to get a jump on the walleye but will be back on shore at Tally's, near Kowalski's, for the 6:30 a.m. send-off ceremony.
At 11:30 a.m. they're scheduled to be back at Tally's for a media show-all, to see what kind of fish they caught.
