St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman on 'Save LGA' road tour

By Joe Kimball | Published Thu, May 21 2009 11:11 am

Because Gov. Tim Pawlenty is likely to slash Local Government Aid to cities as part of the state budget unallotment plan, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman is touring the state today and Friday trying to generate public support for continuing those payments to cities.

Although it's unknown how much the governor will lop off, he had earlier proposed cutting St. Paul's share by $7.7 million in 2009 and $17 million in 2010. Other cities would also see major cuts.

The governor has to find $2.7 billion in cuts to balance the budget, after he and the Legislature failed to agree on a budget proposal before the legislative session ended Monday.

So Coleman is heading to Mankato, Rochester and Albert Lea today, then on to Willmar and Alexandria on Friday, for appearances with local mayors, city council members and legislators.

"We want the governor to keep in mind that now, more than ever, the services that cities provide are critical -- police and fire, parks and libraries," said Bob Hume, a Coleman staffer.

The tour was organized by the Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities.
