North Shore fundraiser planned for Honking Tree landmark, cut down by vandals

By Joe Kimball | Published Thu, May 28 2009 11:01 am

Two Harbors residents, and others who frequent the North Shore of Lake Superior, have lamented the loss of the landmark Honking Tree, a towering white pine on Hwy. 61 that was felled by vandals in April.

Residents used to honk when they passed the tree, symbolizing a safe return home from Duluth and points south.

Now the Black Woods Bar & Grille in Two Harbors -- whose logo includes an image of the tree -- is raising money with a spaghetti dinner to help pay for some kind of memorial, says the Lake County News-Chronicle. Residents have talked about preserving the trunk or planting another tree.

The restaurant will donate $3 to the Honking Tree Fund for every spaghetti meal sold from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Donations to the Honking Tree Fund can also be made directly to The Lake Bank, 613 First Ave., Two Harbors, MN 55616.
