New Rochester airport terminal will cost $76 milion

By Joe Kimball | Published Tue, Jun 23 2009 12:06 pm

Plans for a new airport terminal in Rochester are moving ahead, with a $76 million price tag, reports the Rochester Post Bulletin.

The current terminal is undersized and poorly laid out, a study shows.

The new terminal, at 75,000 square feet, will be about 35 percent larger than the old one and will better accommodate additional passenger gates and more passengers at peak times. It will go between the east ends of the main east-west runway and a future parallel runway.

The old terminal would then be used as a specialty terminal for "VIP" flights, such as the occasional jumbo jets ferrying international passengers to Mayo Clinic. The airport's customs office could remain at the old terminal.

Cost includes $40 million for the new terminal; another $25 million for airfield improvements -- things such as a new apron in front of the new terminal and new taxiways; and $11 million for "landside improvements" -- things such as the new approach drive and terminal parking lot.

About three-quarters of the funding would come from the Federal Aviation Administration, a study says. State government would be needed to cover about one-eighth of it. The airport, local government and business sponsors would have to come up with the rest.

Approval is needed  from the state Department of Transportation and FAA -- usually a three- to four-month process -- then it's back to the city council for final approval.
