Bill Murray shows his stripes; pushes stadium, skips mayor

By Joe Kimball | Published Thu, Jun 25 2009 11:20 am

Actor-comedian Bill Murray was in St. Paul Wednesday wearing his St. Paul Saints hat -- (figuratively, he's a co-owner) -- and stopped by a council meeting to support plans for a new baseball stadium in St. Paul's Lowertown, not far from the Farmers' Market.

He left after the meeting and headed for his hotel. The Pioneer Press blog "City Hall Scoop" has a cute tale of Mayor Chris Coleman's staff suddenly realizing that Murray had left the building -- without stopping to visit hizzoner -- so they fanned out to search the city streets for the wayward star.

Chief of Staff Sara Grewing tracked him down on Fourth Street.

"Mr. Murray!" she chirped. "Excuse me, Mr. Murray," she repeated, more professionally, perhaps concerned she would be ignored as a crazed fan. It seems, Grewing explained in her lawyerly air, Mayor Coleman, his honor, had not been aware of the thespian's presence, and his honor should like it so very much should Mr. Murray see fit perchance to join the mayor for just a wee moment.

Coleman had seen Murray the night before at a Saints game, but today, she explained, he wanted to "show off his office."

"I can't," Murray responded in deadpan. "I have to pack and catch a flight."

Grewing pleaded, throwing in a half-bow and smiling head-tilt: "Ohhh. Reeeaaalllly?"

"I'll be back in town in a few weeks," Murray said. "I'll see him then. Tell him we'll have lunch."
