By Joe Kimball | Published Fri, Jun 26 2009 9:50 am

Congressman Jim Oberstar, who is from Chisholm and is chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today announced that five small airports in the northeastern part of the state are getting $2.2 million in grants from the Federal Aviation Administration.

The money comes from a fund designed for improvements at rural airports.

    The projects:

    • $805,802 to the Brainerd Lake Regional Airport to improve the aircraft rescue and firefighting building and rehabilitate runway aprons, the parking lot and the terminal building.
    •  $95,000 to Grand Marais/Cook County Airport to conduct an environmental impact study for a new runway.
    • $301,601 to Grand Rapids/Itasca Airport to acquire land for expansion, improve a runway and aid planning.
    • $840,750 to Falls International Airport to purchase snow removal equipment, rehabilitate a runway and improve airport beacons.
    • $228,000 to Silver Bay Municipal Airport for the second phase of construction of an arrival-and-departure building.
