Minneapolis Public Schools’ Superintendent William Green said today that he will step down as head of the school district next June.

He said he was informing the school board a year in advance so it will have plenty of time to choose a new leader and ensure a smooth transition. He has served as superintendent for four years.

“I am confident that the major changes and improvements we have made over the past four years -- and will continue to make in the year ahead -- will have established a strong and sustainable foundation for the future of the Minneapolis Public Schools,” he said in his statement today.

After his term ends, Green plans to return to his “two first loves,” teaching and writing as a history professor at Augsburg College in Minneapolis. He has been on leave from the college while serving as superintendent.

    More coverage later today.
