Albert Lea health program gets more national publicity

By Joe Kimball | Published Thu, Oct 15 2009 9:27 am

Albert Lea took another star turn in the national spotlight Wednesday, when ABC's "Good Morning America" show went live from the southern Minnesota city to feature a community health program.

The city has been involved in the AARP/Blue Zones Vitality Project — designed to help residents make simple lifestyle changes that will improve their health and increase longevity. This was GMA's third live segment on the project, said the Albert Lea Tribune.

ABC weekend anchor Kate Snow was the in-town talent and joked that when the project began in January, temperatures were at minus 27 and on Wednesday they were cold, too, about 30 degrees.

Snow said the Vitality Project involved about half of the city’s residents and exceeded the goal to add two years of life to every participant. Results show that residents who participated gained an average of 3.1 years of life expectancy.

Said Randy Kehr, executive director of the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce:  “It has reconnected our community in a way I never thought possible."
