Several nonprofits organizations will receive less money from Steele County next year, as commissioners approved cuts of nearly $100,000 in grants.

The county board approved the recommendations of an advisory committee, which proposed the allocation of $201,000 in grants to non-profits next year, down from $299,857 this year, said the Owatonna People's Press.

Clothesline, a nonprofit that provides clothing to the needy, had requested $21,877, but will get only $13,750. That's nearly $4,000 less than its 2009 grant.

Clothesline Director Mary Fink told the paper: “It is a good chunk of our funding. We sort of have a bare-bones budget, and there is no fluff on there to fall back on. When this gets cut, we start to panic.”

The organization also gets support from the United Way and others, and has a 2010 budget of $98,186, the paper said.

Other allocation decisions:

• The Steele County Food Shelf requested $40,000 and received $36,000.
• The Crisis Resource Center of Steele County requested $40,000 and received $27,900.
• Big Brothers Big Sisters requested $15,000 and received $5,000.
• Success by 6 program requested $20,000 and received $6,200.
• A full request of $5,500 was granted to Medford Senior Care Connection.
• SEMCAC, a community service agency, received the entire $13,000 requested for transportation and $4,900 requested for senior food and nutrition programs. However, SEMCAC did not receive any grant money for the Senior Caregiver Advocate program.
