    State Sen. Chaudhary attending tonight's White House state dinner for Indian prime minister

    State Sen. Satveer Chaudhary will attend a White House state dinner tonight to honor India Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

    Chaudhary — a DFLer from Fridley whose parents emigrated from India in the 1960s — is the first Asian-Indian senator in the nation, notes MPR's Polinaut.

    Chaudhary is quoted in a news release:

    "I'm honored to be invited to attend this noteworthy event. The event highlights the strong and growing economic and political partnership between India and the United States, as well as the friendship between the two countries."

    President Obama's first state dinner is an attempt to ease tensions caused by the president's recent attention to Pakistan and China. Good relations with India are deemed essential to U.S. terrorism efforts in Pakistan and Afghanistan and in dealing with China on trade and climate issues.
