March and service tonight to honor homeless who've died

By Joe Kimball | Published Thu, Dec 17 2009 10:10 am

Advocates for the homeless will honor homeless people who died this year with a nearly three-mile march through Minneapolis and a service at Simpson United Methodist Church.

It's the 25th annual Homeless Memorial March and Service. Last year, the service honored 131 homeless and formerly homeless people, as well as homeless advocates, who died in Minnesota in 2008.

    The schedule of events:

    • 5 p.m. — March and Silent Vigil starts at the Hennepin County Government Center at Third Avenue and Fifth Street in downtown Minneapolis. The march follows Fifth Street west to Nicollet Avenue and proceeds south to 28th Street.
    • 6:30 p.m. — Service of Remembrance at Simpson United Methodist Church, 2740 First Ave. S., with speaker Monica Nilsson, director of outreach for St. Stephen's Human Services, president of the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless and longtime advocate for the homeless community.
    • 7:30 p.m. — Community Meal at Simpson Shelter in the basement of Simpson Church.

Sponsors are Simpson Housing Services, Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless and the Shelter Providers Action Association.

Parking is available at the Kmart parking lot, 10 W. Lake St., near the church, and at 4:20 p.m. shuttle buses will take marchers to the downtown starting point.

For more information, contact Simpson Housing Services, 612-874-8683.
