Rep. Tim Walz says he worried all along that Senate wouldn't pass climate change bill

By Joe Kimball | Published Wed, Jul 28 2010 1:38 pm

U.S. Rep. Tim Walz is quoted in a Politico story about House Democrats who passed a climate change bill but now feel burned by the Senate's refusal to act on the legislation.

Republicans are using the vote as campaign fodder in many districts around the country. The story says Republican operatives "are giddy about [Speaker Nancy] Pelosi’s decision to push ahead on climate change despite any commitment from Senate Democratic leaders that they’d do the same."

The story includes this Walz section:

“If this was all about the theatrics of climate change for our base ... that’s simply not good enough,” said Rep. Tim Walz, a southern Minnesota Democrat who helped negotiate key agriculture provisions just before the floor vote.[...] Walz said he had concerns early on about the prospect of the Senate punting on a climate bill.

“I have to tell you, there were some members that assured me,” Walz said. “And I was not naive. I said, ‘I’m not certain it would happen.’ They were assuring me it would happen. I said, ‘I don’t think it will.’”

    Says the story:

Republican operatives said they welcome a debate over climate, especially for the moderate Democrats who reluctantly went along with Pelosi. After all, GOP leaders didn’t hide the fact that they wanted the bill to pass last year on the floor so it could later die in the Senate.
