On the heels of Gov. Tim Pawlenty's visit to Afghanistan and Iraq, he and first lady Mary Pawlenty announced an expansion of the state's assistance program for military families and said the National Guard will take control of the program.
The Military Family Care Initiative, an online program, matches volunteers with families that have a parent deployed overseas. The program will now allow businesses to register services and discounts to help military families.
And it will now be handled under the Guard's "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon" program, which has been a model for similar programs in other states.
In 2003, Mary Pawlenty launched the Military Family Care Initiative.
Officials say more than 500 Minnesota National Guard soldiers and airmen are currently deployed worldwide.
