GOP won't let go of tracker talk, launches contest

By Jay Weiner | Published Thu, Sep 2 2010 11:11 am

Stunt though it may be, the Minnesota Republican Party just won't let go of the tracker thread in the early stages of the gubernatorial campaign.

Today the GOP announced a contest for citizens to devise a uniform for GOP trackers following DFL candidate Mark Dayton.

Remember, in mid-August, Dayton objected to the allegedly disruptive behavior of GOP trackers. He called on GOP trackers — those people who videotape and audio-record his every public move — to at least wear some sort of identification.

Last week at the State Fair, GOP chairman Tony Sutton — always in search of fun and satireunveiled two tracker T-shirts for the duration of the Great Minnesota Get Together.

Today, the GOP announced a contest for supporters to create their own Dayton-tracking uniforms.

"Due to popular demand, I’m proud to announce that the Party will be a holding a one-time-only tracker uniform contest where Minnesotans can submit their own ideas of what they would see our highly capable trackers wear as uniforms,” Sutton said in a statement.

Contestants can submit their entries at the GOP booth at the Fair or via email at contest@mngop.com. The winners will be on display Monday at 9 a.m. at the GOP booth.

Last week, a DFL spokesman called the GOP T-shirt "fashion show" a stunt and wondered if Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer wins the November election, "Are we just going to have four years of political stunts? Minnesota deserves better.”
