Weekly wrap-up: Minnesota’s congressional delegation
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As Congress heads toward its Memorial Day recess, here’s a look what the Minnesota delegation took on this week.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar won the highest approval rating in the Senate at 62 percent, according to an updated ranking by Public Policy Polling. (Meanwhile, Sen. Roland Burris, D-Ill., grabbed the lowest spot, with a 17 percent approval rating).
Klobuchar also met with Andy Wells, Minnesota’s Small Business Person of the Year, and introduced legislation that aims to streamline the employment transition for veterans who have emergency medical training.
Klobuchar will be honoring Memorial Day at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Rep. Tim Walz helped spur an audit (PDF) into counterparty payments made by AIG with federal Wall Street bailout funds.
Rep. John Kline, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, spoke on the House floor in praise of the Weapon System Acquisition Reform Act of 2009, which seeks to better the Pentagon’s weapons purchasing program.
Kline, who is a 25-year veteran of the Marine Corps, will also be traveling to France with a Republican Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina to lead the official Memorial Day ceremonies at the Normandy American Cemetery.
Rep. Erik Paulsen spoke from the House floor about how the closing of Chrysler and GM dealerships nationwide had affected his district.
The Minnesota Independent reports that Paulsen’s recent commencement speech at St. Olaf College in Northfield prompted a silent demonstration in protest of Paulsen’s vote against the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity in the federal hate crimes law.
Rep. Betty McCollum cosponsored the “Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2009,” which would provide $50 million already in the Department of Commerce’s budget to train health inspectors to spot the insects.
Rep. Keith Ellison introduced legislation that would fund and create a bank that would direct public and private dollars toward infrastructure projects of national and regional significance.
Ellison attended a signing ceremony where President Obama signed into law Ellison’s renters’ rights provision to protect renters in foreclosure cases.
Rep. Michele Bachmann continued to spar with Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., over ACORN.
Rep. Collin Peterson became the best shot in Congress after winning last week’s 2009 Congressional Shoot Out.
Rep. Jim Oberstar ushered in the Federal Aviation Administration Reauthorization Act of 2009, which provides $70 billion for the FAA’s capital programs for fiscal year 2009 to 2012. The bill also increases the number of aviation safety inspectors, creates an independent Aviation Safety Whistleblower Investigation Office within the FAA, provides funding for runway safety programs, calls for additional inspections of overseas aircraft repair stations, and requires the FAA to study and update its regulations regarding flight-crew fatigue.
