DENVER — Street theater, prophets, protesters, hawkers, folks on a mission — they were all a part of the city scene here. And a goodly number of similar advocates likely will fill the streets of downtown St. Paul during the Republican National Convention.

Barack Obama faces a sharp GOP thrust to turn his dazzling rhetorical skills into a liability unless he stresses down-to-earth substance in the next few weeks. And even as the upcoming GOP convention honors President Bush and Vice President Cheney, John McCain faces a delicate dance in showing that he is not like them.
The crowd cheering Barack Obama at Invesco Field in Denver was far larger, but his supporters were just as enthusiastic at Trocaderos night club in Minneapolis.
Barack Obama gets a nice bump from Twin Cities dailies, and pleasant protesters head here from Denver.

DENVER -- Long lines filing into a football stadium witnessed a special day for Barack Obama, his supporters, black America and the nation. Minnesota delegates talk movingly about his accomplishment and the anniversary of two civil-rights milestones, including Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Will he — or won't he — be Sen. John McCain's running mate. That's about the only thing 100 inquiring media minds want to know.

DENVER — A professional woman of style and substance. A mother with young children in the White House. Observers say Michelle Obama as first lady could quickly become a groundbreaking role model in American society.
Barack Obama is the candidate of change. Yet the most critical task ahead for the Democrats has not changed since the historic turn of 1980: win the approval of white working-class voters.
In our locally specific Day Three DNC roundup, the roll call of silliness, echoes of the March on Washington, and Code Pinkers cringe.
DENVER — Most of Minnesota's delegates are neither rich nor powerful, and many have come here at considerable personal expense. They endure 13-hour days, each filled with about 50 speeches and countless meetings. Why? "Because it's the right thing" to do, says Mike Sundin, a labor guy from Carlton County.
DENVER — After their candidate came so close, most of the state delegates supporting Hillary Rodham Clinton heed her call and rally to support Barack Obama. Even the eight who felt compelled not to change their vote seem onboard for a unity campaign this fall.
DENVER — Minnesota delegation member Marcia Betker can tell you from experience what NOT to wear. Many delegates are finding themselves with up-close encounters with Walter Mondale, who's joining in all the state activities and camaraderie.
DENVER — Just down the road from the Democrats' convention hall, 500 bloggers are changing the way voters can participate in conventions and politics in general, according to one of the innovation's organizers.
Are the officially credentialed bloggers sympathetic to the Democratic cause? The complete answer will emerge throughout the course of the coming week. But so far, convention bloggers have proved wide-ranging — some obsequious, many irreverent.
Even as Hillary Rodham Clinton gave a rousing speech to unify Democrats, her supporters grapple with one harsh truth: By several measures, the short-term prospects of seeing a woman command the Oval Office are bleak.
A compendium of hometown reports from Denver.
DENVER — Hillary Rodham Clinton's address to the convention unleashes a flood of emotion among her state backers. Yes, they feel bad that the race truly is over now. But the speech — the grace of it, the power of it, the empathy of it — justified all the good feelings they'd always had about their candidate. Now, they say they're ready to unite around Barack Obama.
DENVER — Texas congresswoman wows even the weary by invoking Hubert Humphrey, Martin Luther King, Paul Wellstone, and Walter Mondale.
DENVER — Just months ago, folks were heatedly arguing over the nation's primary system and the power of superdelegates. Now, the focus is all on the fall elections. But the issue is coming back. Proposals abound for changing the system, and if successful, Minnesota could get its own presidential primary.
What most characterizes the Denver convention isn't the historic skin tone of the nominee. No, what's most palpable among Democrats this time is their visceral need to win.
DENVER -- Sen. Amy Klobuchar tells convention that electing Barack Obama will allow him to complete the work he's already begun.
DENVER — Minnesota's Rep. Keith Ellison wins plaudits — and inspires caucus members — as nation's first Muslim member of Congress. He also urges strong support for Obama, despite some misgivings in the Muslim community.

Democrats open their national convention in Denver today with their presidential ticket completed in more ways than one.
DENVER — After an emotional bonding meeting here Sunday night, state delegates supporting Hillary Rodham Clinton seem to be unifying behind Barack Obama. But there's still more healing to come — and, likely, a few protest votes.

After months of waiting and national political wrangling, Minnesota delegates from both parties are genuinely excited to play their role on the national stage. Meet two Democrats, who will be in Denver this week, and two Republicans, who get their turn next week in St. Paul.
