Pop funk is the trademark sound of a band that found its genesis in a North Minneapolis basement.

The Time, the band formed by Prince, racked up a number of hits in the early 1980s. But band members Jimmy Jam Harris and Terry Lewis were eventually fired by Prince for missing a concert because of a snowstorm.
 
The rest, as they say, is history.

Harris and Lewis, both Minnesota natives, became prolific mega-wattage music producers who only recently moved to Los Angeles. Prince, of course, became a rock-and-roll hall of famer, and Minnesota found its place on the music map.
 
Tonight, at the newly opened Minneapolis Hotel, the original members of The Time including lead singer Morris Day, will treat a group of lucky ticket-holders to the unique Minneapolis sound that made them famous.
 
Their concert, a fundraiser for the Adopt a Room Foundation, marks the first time in 25 years that "The Time" has performed together in Minneapolis, where it all started.
 
And what's interesting is that after all this time, The Time says there's nothing that can replace what they call the Minneapolis vibe.
