'We do better when we all do better': On the campaign trail with Al Franken

In the weeks before the general election, Democratic Senate candidate Al Franken brought the big guns to town: former first lady (and former presidential candidate) Sen. Hillary Clinton.

The Clinton/Franken rally at the University of Minnesota drew several thousand supporters.

But at a much more sparsely attended campaign stop, on a cold Saturday morning in St. Paul, Franken, who is often — and at times accurately — accused of wearing his heart on his sleeve, acknowledged he'll be carrying a deeper influence with him down the homestretch: the memory of the late Sen. Paul Wellstone.

I was shocked to see Senator Amy K on a commercial with Al Franken.

The Star could not even endorse the guy.

Maybe Al in the senate will make our "do nothing Senator" look better?

It really shows a lack of character on Amy k's part.

I'm really sorry Mr. Gotzman feels that way. Amy endorsed Al because he supports moral positions. That might sound odd, because he's acknowledged writing off-color satires and skits. But he is a MORAL man. He belives in protecting the least among us, the poor and uninsured and under-educated who can't afford to improve their skills and make a secure living.

Anyone who goes to movies or watches cable television knows that the world is no longer like "Leave It to Beaver." Maybe it never was. Greed and racism and violence have always been our greatest sins. I don't love all of Al's humor, but that doesn't change the principles he stands for. And I'm sure when he went to entertain troops in Iraq - seven times, on his own, out of the goodness of his heart - he probably told some raunchy jokes to make them laugh. God knows they needed someone to lift their spirits.

I wish Ron Gotzman could sit down and talk to Al Franken. We first got to know Al Franken when he was campaigning for others across this state. Al went all over Minnesota working hard to see good people elected. We also heard Al speak shortly after Senator Paul and Sheila Wellstone died. Al was visibly moved as he spoke of Sheila and Paul and he shared his love for them. I am glad Roxane talked about Senator Paul Wellstone in this video. We have in Al Franken a man who will fight for the same issues that Paul Wellstone did - with the same energetic passion and the same heart that cares deeply about others. Al Franken will fight for those who need a voice. He will work hard for Minnesota so we all do better.
