Midwest Energy Resources Co., the largest coal terminal on the Great Lakes, expects a record amount of shipments this year, reports Peter Passi of the Duluth News Tribune (registration required).  The company plans to ship 23 million tons of coal this year, beating its previous record of 21.8 million in 2006.

National Geographic Traveler Magazine named Red Wing the 23rd most historic destination in the world in its November-December 2008 issue, writes Jon Swedlen of the Red Wing Republican Eagle.  

Groundbreaking wind-to-battery technology was unveiled in the middle of farm fields northwest of Beaver Creek Monday, writes Julie Buntjer in the Worthington Daily Globe. “The battery,” she writes, “the first of its kind to be tested in the United States, will help partners Xcel Energy and Luverne-based Minwind Energy capture and store power produced by the 11.5-megawatt Minwind Energy wind farm.”

A deer hunter became lost in the woods in Thompson Township for the second time in one week last Wednesday, writes Wendy Johnson of the Pine Journal.  Search parties eventually found the man on both occasions.

A man found unconscious in a truck believed to be stocked with the chemicals for a meth lab later escaped from an ambulance and is on the run, reports Kevin Behr of the Winona Daily News.  Narcotics investigators are searching for the suspect.
