    Times of recession: Economic problems hit the box office

    Penumbra Theatre Company, the largest African-American theater in the country, cut its general operating budget by 24 percent this year and is postponing some shows.

    The non-profit theater was already paying back $600,000 of debt, and now the recession has reduced its ticket revenue and foundation support.

    The theater has not laid off workers to cut costs and has said it would not sacrifice the quality of its work to stay open.
