The worst of the foreclosure crisis may be over in southeastern Minnesota, writes Mike Klein in the Rochester Post-Bulletin. “After rising sharply for three consecutive years, the number of foreclosures in Olmsted County fell in the first six months of 2009 [159] compared to 2008 [216],” the story says.

Tim Byrne and other growers are about to introduce SweeTango as the successor to the incredibly successful Honeycrisp, reports Steve Karnowski of the AP in the Winona Daily News. The story says the new apple - which, like the Honeycrisp, was developed at the University of Minnesota - “has Honeycrisp's crispness and juice but kicks up the flavor and adds an intriguing note of fall spice. It was made by crossing Honeycrisp with Zestar!, another University of Minnesota variety.”

The town of Wheaton is reeling after the death of a 14-month-old girl who was struck by a baseball bat during an altercation between adults during a prayer service at a church, writes Sherri Richards in the Worthington Daily Globe.

John and Kathleen Schumacher reopened their historic hotel and restaurant on Sept. 4, more than four years after closing the business, writes Chuck Kajer in the New Prague Times.
The New Prague Hotel’s restaurant menu has been updated, Schumacher said, but some recipes are the same ones the hotel used when Adeline Senkyr operated the business. "I haven't been able to improve on her sauerkraut, dumplings or banana crème pie.”
