MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
You're right. The acting is REALLY bad in the CSA movie.
I've been reading dystopian alt-histories centered on World War II ("The Man in the High Castle" and "The Plot Against America"). I'll have to move backward to the Civil War with Kantor's piece. It sounds fascinating.
My biggest problem with the CSA movie was also the idea that if the CSA had won the Civil War it would have decided to take over the Union territory. It's pure BS, but the thought experiment is an important...
I'd think that if they were split, we would have a better social safety net in the North. That said, without economic powerhouses outside the Union-Confederate divide (think Calif., Texas, etc.), neither may have been as powerful enough as to have the effect the whole has had.
There is beauty in the stark, clean presentation of the new site. I think it's beautiful and profoundly more user-friendly than the previous incarnation, which was just horrible.
The more Minneapolis modernizes, the more beautiful St. Paul becomes.
I'm not a Wolves fan, but I have seen concerts at the Target Center. The charismatic stylings of Bono and The Edge could barely salvage the sound quality of the venue.
Xcel is a world apart from that.
As for the Target Center, I just hope the thing comes out looking better than its neighbor across First.
Speaking to the president's statement, I understand where he is coming from to an extent. An alternative, though, would be to keep the story posted but remove commenting. That would eradicate the main problem at hand and allow for the piece to remain online.
In other words, it is a convenient excuse.
Eric:
You overlooked a better analogy: Elmer L. Andersen. His story is a bit better example of "Andersenization."
There isn't a direct parallel because Andersen was an incumbent and Emmer isn't, but Elmer did accept the results of an independent recount panel and proceeded to cede his seat to Rolvaag.
The margins were a lot slimmer in that race (within about a 100 votes), but the precedent is there: Don't drag Minnesotans through un-necessary legal hassles.
Rob and Readers:
Just an FYI: "Where the Wild Things Are" is now playing at Hopkins Theatre - it looks like about 5 times a day.
I think that over economy and dwindling advertising, or even the Internet, all of the large dailies are struggling because of poor executive leadership, not just the CSM.
The profit margin expectations are unrealistic. These private equity firms who buy the papers treat them as a commodity like oil or steel.
Additionally, these executives and their editorial extensions were dreadfully slow to embrace the Internet.
It's a shame that quality reportage has to suffer under...
