MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.
Donations and pledges totaling $25,000 or more have been made by each of the families and foundations listed. For a list of all donors by category, see our most recent Year End Report.
If the notorious Koch brothers did buy the Strib, we can all assume that it would become another channel for far-right wing propaganda. In that case, there would be an organized campaign to drop subscriptions, boycott, and bankrupt the paper. Maybe the fat cats in Wayzata should consider that before they consider selling our "community asset" to the devils.
"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know, that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." [Carl Sagan, 1987 CSICOP keynote address]
I absolutely agree that the "zipper merge" is yet another failed idea that some whiz kid in MNDOT got to work in a computer simulation. Said kid must ride a bicycle to work because in real life traffic, that failure is utterly apparent. When the left lane goes away, some people will try to be polite and merge early and painlessly. Other people will haul ass down the left lane, passing as many cars as possible to "get ahead" of them before they jam into right lane, causing that lane to...
There has been much hoopla this year about tax "fairness". It's only fair for those with much to pay more than those with little. Or only fair for those that use something to be taxed for that something. With that in mind, here is the most fair tax change that is least likely to ever see the light of day. People who have children get tax deductions for each child. But those children go to schools that everyone pays for. So, in effect, those of us without any children are paying more...
The whole point of the constitution ensuring religious freedom is that it provides freedom for EVERYONE, not just you. You can worship however you must, just don't infringe on my beliefs and practices. If some public official has to resign to avoid dealing with gays, so be it. There are lots of other people who would be happy to have those jobs. Separate religion and politics, people. Matthew 22:21
As planned, the SW corridor project practically duplicates the already established, fast, comfortable, efficient bus service from Eden Prairie to downtown and the U of M. The proposed routes either zigzag all over town looking for passengers or pass over the swamp that regularly eats the water mains around the nearby strip mall. There is the old rail line that was saved expressly for a future light rain line, but that is now a biking/walking trail with huge NIMBY support. All told, I just...
Throwing money at education does not improve it. Taking money away from education though, does hurt it. I think this is just a big GOP plan to win elections. The less educated people are, the more ignorant they are and the more they tend to vote GOP. Don't believe me? Just look at Bachmann's district.
Can't we even agree on terms? A civil union is that legal contract the establishes next of kin, inheritability, tax benefits, and hundreds of other LEGAL rights between two people. EVERYONE who gets married enters into a civil union. Marriage, on the other hand, is that ceremony that takes place in a place of worship and involves vows to a higher power. For all these parties to reject civil unions is just plain stubborn and misinformed.
I did a programming project at Wells Fargo a few years ago. They were converting paper forms to online forms. One of the forms was a report on offshore assests. They had $62 Billion deposited in a post office box number in Grand Cayman. I commented on this and was told that "it was perfectly legal." Hiding this money and avoiding the millions in taxes that would have otherwise gone into maintaining the state and city where they have their actual headquarters, leaves the rest of us to...
Actually the reference to Nazis is apt, but not in the way the MPM would want it to be. The Nazis wanted to exterminate homosexuals, along with Jews and Gypsies. I guess discriminate is better than exterminate, but it's still not a very Christian thing to do. And exactly what is "biblical marriage"? I'm not a Bible scholar but I seem to remember lots of cases of multiple wives, concubines, slaves, and taking on the brother's wife after he died. Again, not a good reference.
