If I'm not mistaken, didn't those peaks and valleys flatten post Minnesota Miracle? Wasn't it true that prior to that particular initiative (and LGA), that the state actually tended to lag behind regionally? It's kind of too bad the majorities in the houses aren't as civic minded as they were back then...

Well, Emmer becoming the governor was part of the larger planned nationwide GOP horror show we're now seeing unfold nationwide- grifters, hacks, and actual criminals (Florida Governor Rick Scott)- leading a race to the bottom sponsored by a social class apparently out for revenge for The New Deal.

I imagine the GOP's version of "prosperity" would include gated communities for the rich and their toadies, and on the outside a seething mass of of helots stabbing each other in the back...

Posted on 05/06/11 at 10:33 am in response to On FoxNews debate, Tim Pawlenty scores some points among GOP's 'B' squad

Possibly the most pathetic and disgusting segment of this bit of infotainment was when they were asked to raise their hands if they approved of torture.

A bit startling, especially since they also make a big show of their purported fealty to the teachings of a man who was nailed to a wooden cross...

Posted on 05/05/11 at 11:57 am in response to Is Minnesota ready for government by constitutional amendment?

The only "jobs" these people are concerned with are their own. They are counting on all the rubes and the haters to come out, ignore some basic facts about their own situations, and vote against their own interests, leaving the GOP in power in the process. They and their backers win- everybody else loses. Government by referendum destroyed California's political culture, and the GOP is desperate bring this horror here and nationally- to lock in their master's prerogatives before the...

Posted on 05/02/11 at 12:15 am in response to For the moment, Minnesota's political leaders come together

When the 9/11 attack occurred, we had to go to war with the President we had, not the President we needed.

Now that the symbol of our collective panic is dead, maybe we can FINALLY start to calm down, give ourselves a chance to reason again.

Hell, maybe we can even demobilize faster- a Peace Dividend could come in really handy now...

I say, make your plans but don't expect any movement until the GOP "works themselves out of a job" and is booted out of office. The amazing thing, as always, is that a mix of light and heavy rail *is* the conservative approach- conservative of resources, conservative of land, conservative of fuel. Even their otherwise worthless book (and failed movie), "Atlas Shrugged," is full of choo-choos...

Posted on 04/17/11 at 02:54 pm in response to Helping the needy: philanthropy can only do so much

"Americans are the most generous people on the face of the earth. They just have to be convinced that the recipients are really in need."

MATTHEW 25:31-46 says you do not get to choose who is worthy. The only choice is between humanity and the fire.

Of course, for me, as an atheist, I feel that the only rational way to avoid bodies in the street is for everybody to help the helpless.

Telling the church or the charities to go handle it so we all don't have to think about...

Right, and making sure your workforce know in uncertain terms that they are expendable garbage isn't going to promote safety and efficiency. Meritocracy sounds fine in the abstract, but applied in the real world it just means that the boss elevates the fawning sycophants- and that particular skill set doesn't ensure safety or efficiency either.

I miss Jim Oberstar on this issue- he would have been all over it. I wonder what the new Representative thinks of all this but I guess...

Who will "Conservative" women back for President? Whoever they are told to to back, just like with "Conservative" men- Rush tells them, they tell their wives...

Posted on 03/22/11 at 10:28 am in response to Education funding bill is packed with political dynamite

It really does seem like they are on some kind of insane mission to do as much damage as possible before demographics and popular anger sweep them right out of office again.

In a way they seem like the old-time Stalinists- defending their ideological position no matter the evidence. For them, Conservatism cannot fail, you can only fail Conservatism...
