Joel! Contratulations. MinnPost is such a welcome oasis in the journalism desert. (Too much coffee causes delusions of grand metaphors.) One million. Awesome. Thanks for the work all y'all are doing here.

This article is not at all about me. But my heart hurts for everyone involved. I absolutely cannot imagine the anguish of Vern Gagne's family, and his daughter's reaction is not surprising. Celebrity or not, there is a cross-over point that has been breached here, I think.

And of course, there's the anguish of the Gutmann family as well.

When some of the pain has subsided (and that will likely take a long, long time), this terrible episode may serve/may have served to shine...

What is truly bothersome about all of this is what seems to be the understanding that truth-telling may very well lead to litigation, job loss or both. Thus it is that not only those being quoted are at risk but also the journalist writing the story. And given the economic realities that surround us, how many journalists are willing to speak boldly and take the risk? Just askin'.

Umm, concerning number 10? Can I have your glove?

Still, he observes, "We will get to the other side by staying true to who we are."

Well now, you see, that's rather the heart of the matter, isn't it? "Who are you?" The newspaper formerly known as the Star Tribune which has morphed into Strib Lite with a double right twist? I'm guessing that Katherine Kersten is not on the endangered list. Watch your back, Nick! And as for the "little people," the word to OutsourceLand is: "Incoming!"

A formerly fine newspaper has sowed...

Shameless self-promotion moment:

You know that thing about the technology gap? Forgot to add a link to my blog in the above comment.

You know, there is something truly heartwarming about being able to check the little box by the comment log in that says, "Remember me for two weeks." It helps me transcend the growing belief as a blogaholic that my 15 minutes has come and gone and that I/we still exist.

Eric, FWIW, the Strib screwed up royally when it parted company with you (when you left to pursue other interests, whatever).

Bless you for being out there on behalf of the bloggerhood. I totally get the...

There are many reasons why I supported Steve Kelley for governor when I was a delegate to the 2006 DFL convention. Part of my decision was instinct that said Mike Hatch was the wrong person for the job. I took a boatload of flack from a few staunch Hatch supporters for my unwavering support of Kelley.

Every word I read in your post, Eric, confirms my worst fears about the volatile former AG and his apparent reign of terror in the AG office, then and now.

"...the state cannot...

(Cliche alert) At the end of the day, (alert ends) Barack Obama is the same man he was at the beginning of it. We needn't wonder what new persona will be his disguise du jour. He will not be the tearful person discovering his own voice, followed by outspoken NAFTA opponent, followed by Rocky Balboa, followed by shot-quaffing, gun-toting guy guy.

'Will Clinton continue to go after Obama about his comments about small town voters "clinging" to guns or religion because they become "...

What an incredible project. All of it. But in particular, "13 Stars of Light" and Ted Farrar.

Like so many others, I have been schlogging around in the slough of despond lately (well, actually for seven years but who's counting?). Just when I have concluded yet again that all is hopeless and that we are, in fact, doomed as a society, that "civilization" is a misnomer, I run across something like Cynthia Boyd's article.

Showcasing goodness and diversity. Amen to that,...
