Is the noblest profession in my opinion. Humble, yet literally the most important.

Wrong, women on the street owe men saying "hi" nothing.

How is this sharing? You are renting, i.e. paying money to use something. Do you consider the local Holiday Inn to be a room share company? These services are not some egalitarian greater good. They are designed to make people money, treat them that way.

Posted on 06/17/14 at 01:44 pm in response to The smoking memos: Big Tobacco's longstanding interest in marijuana

Most people do not necessarily want people to smoke more pot. They just see that our nation's prisons are filled with those with marijuana convictions. It is very counter productive for society to throw so many in prison for something that while unhealthy, should not have life changing consequences.

If tobacco smokers were having their lives destroyed by smoking a plant like tobacco I would also urge for its legalization as well. Some people (the police) very much want to have...

When was that exactly? I'm pretty sure government debt has existed since the dawn of civilization.

Posted on 05/06/13 at 03:48 pm in response to 'Belt and suspenders' for transit would be more like a noose

I applaud the author for suggesting some form of mass transit rather than just focusing on more lanes and cars. But if you are concerned about ongoing costs of a transportation system then you would realize that BRT is more expensive for similar capacities.

In every rich country paying drivers is the most expensive part of the transit equation. A typical BRT vehicle can handle about 70 passengers. A three car LRT train-set can handle 270 passengers with the same labor costs as a bus...

"One story taxpayers" refer to a type of building. A building that is usually cheap and produces enough revenue to pay property taxes. They are generally place holders until something larger can be financed.

I believe David meant to say that his engineer colleagues would rather have steel or concrete building constructed over wood frame buildings.

Of course six story buildings pay taxes, but a "tax payer" is a type or style of building.
