Posted on 04/14/11 at 10:33 am in response to LensCrafters to Bachmann: Leave us out of it

Ms. Bachmann's purposeful misquoting of Trombley tells us everything we need to know about her:

* She is perfectly comfortable twisting words and deceiving her audience if it benefits her.

* Her ideological hatred of PP is so great that she is willing to demolish an organization that provides a broad variety of affordable family planning and womens' health services (and for which, in many areas, there is no alternative source), and doesn't care how she does it.

* But...

Dee Ann (#3): Where's the proof that raising taxes on high rollers will hurt job creation? How long has this tax been in effect? And...where are the plethora of jobs created by this policy?

The obvious answer is that (i) there is no such proof; (ii) the reason there is no proof is because the premise is simply false; and (iii) if Clinton-era taxes were "job killers," it's hard to fathom the booming economy, low unemployment, general prosperity and projected *budget surpluses* (...

Dennis (#10): "Any alleged "non-profit" entity that relies on government funds to stay open should either become a government agency, operate in the private sector, or close down."

Great, and while we're at it, let's apply the same rule to for-profit corporations as well. You know, the defense contractors, construction firms, and what-not, that rely completely on the public dole for their funding? How about the for-profits that "need" big property and income tax breaks just to keep...

Posted on 04/11/11 at 12:01 pm in response to Republican budget roadmap is from 'fantasyland'

"It would mean the U.S. going back to the sort of country it was in 1900."

But isn't that the essence of the GOP vision for our country? Zero-based governing is only one facet of their atavistic fantasy land. In their future dream world, you will also find that:

* everyone is white (except share croppers and household staff);

* We're decades away from passage of the 19th Amendment, ergo no pesky woman voters;

* We're a "Christian Nation" (no worries about Sharia...

Don't sell yourself short, Ms. Bachmann; you're not just w-a-a-y conservative, you're w-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-y conservative!

Paul,

Ah, but let us not forget the teachings of the Pai-ma Lun: 白馬非馬!

As a JD, I would never describe myself as having a doctoral degree. In my view, that distinction belongs to those who have attained an LL.D. Call me old-fashioned; I suppose others may do as they wish.

However,I will certainly use your arguments next time I'm accused of not being a real doctor!

Posted on 04/07/11 at 12:28 pm in response to Bachmann's qualifications to be prez

Paul (#5), The JD is just a rebranded LLB, which was traditionally considered a baccalaureate degree (thus the "B" in LLB). Similarly, the "M" in LLM stands for "Master". There's also a doctoral degree in law, which comes after the LLM. So calling an LLM a "post-doctorate degree" is really pretty misleading. But since her JD is from a faux law school, and her LLM is a faux degree, I guess it doesn't really matter what you call it.

My wife has a PhD, and never lets me forget that...

I like the way that a master's degree in tax has become a "post-doctoral" degree for Bachmann. Way to spiff up that resume, Michelle!

Dennis (#3): "Let's see now, what happened in November? Coincidence? I don't think so."

Okay, Dennis, help me out here. To what Republican-sponsored legislation that has been passed and put into effect since November 2010, on the State or Federal level, can these improving employment numbers be attributed? I'm truly interested to hear.

On the other hand, might it not have just something to do with stimulus spending starting to have its predicted effects?

Posted on 04/06/11 at 09:52 am in response to Senate GOP wants to cut all business property taxes

‘There are legislatures and governors around this country lowering taxes, making their states more competitive for their employers,’ said Sen. Geoff Michel, R-Edina. ‘We need to engage in that competition.'

Meaning we want to keep up with the Joneses in the race to the bottom by assuring that already profitable corporations make even more profits without investing in their communities or creating jobs.

I used to think that corporations should pay their fair share of taxes to...
