MinnPost is a nonprofit, nonpartisan enterprise whose mission is to provide high-quality journalism for news-intense people who care about Minnesota.

Problem is, I can't imagine the feds offered Petters any sort of deal that would have given him a chance to get out of jail alive (not saying I blame them, he earned it) -- so why not go for broke at trial? To Petters, what's the difference between copping to a 30 year sentence or going to trial and getting a 300 year sentence? Might as well shoot for acquittal.
"These high priced legal eagles seem to be chafing at the bit when the prospect of working 'pro bono' is looming."
This is an easy statement to make given the relatively high salaries commanded by top-flight white collar defense lawyers such as the ones representing Hecker and and Petters. However, the reality is that cases with a scope as wide and broad as Hecker's or Petters' could easily consumer multiple attorneys and staff for multiple years. Even for well-compensated attorneys...
Closer by committee is not in Gardy's cookbook, therefore, it cannot be used.
Prior to the last 20 years or so, Supreme Court justices frequently had no previous judicial experience. As a result, it was notoriously difficult to predict what you would get in a Supreme Court justice (just ask Ike).
As nominee battles have become more politicized, the urge to nominate judges with clear track records has become much greater.
I recall one Dodge Charger ad -- about a guy whose life is painted to be pretty standard/boring (married, kids; other uninspired shots at a 'normal' life) but for his car -- perhaps that was Fallon's entry?
Pat, I find that explanation of why greenies are not the problem that steroids are even more troubling -- now we need to draw lines on levels of cheating? It's ok if a method of cheating doesn't change the record books, but if it does, then there's a problem?
Again, the total and utter lack of consistency among methods of cheating troubles me greatly.
Not to mention that the Hall of Fame standards regarding character and integrity do not, by the language of the standards,...
Gregory, Maris had an exceptional run for a few years -- but overall, his career is not worthy. There should be a section of the hall dedicated to noteworthy achievements in baseball history, but his career doesn't stack up.
Then again, with the loosey-goosey moral boost that some players are apparently entitled to under Pat's scheme, perhaps he helped enough old ladies across the street to gain entrance.
Peter beat me to my first question, Pat: do you support kicking out noted cheaters and PED users already in the hall, such as the Mick (greenies, now on the banned PED list), or Gaylord Perry (happy to admit to doctoring baseballs)? Where is the outrage from current hall of famers on those cheaters, or the numerous others already in the hall?
And if we're going to take character into account, better think about Ty Cobb, generally known as a miserable human being, or Babe Ruth, who...
"A child injured or killed by a vaccine is just as tragic as a child injured or killed by disease."
I don't think anyone would dispute that.
But, we can reduce total injuries and deaths if everyone gets the standard vaccination. It really is that simple.
What is a shame is that vaccinations are available to virtually everyone in the US, and yet, people put their kids at greater risk by not having them vaccinated. Meanwhile, children in third world countries are dying...
Let's hope this is a sign of smarter investment by the Twins. Forget giving big bucks to the Puntos and Batista of the world that can be replaced for league minimum wages; this is where the money should be invested.
Now, if BS can make some moves this smart in free agency...
